Dripping with alchemy

April 1, 2009

Goddamn I love Polly Jean Harvey:
White Chalk

Here’s a close-up of her face:

And here’s the sister piece, Karen O, dripping with alchemy:

And:

If you want a print of the Karen O or PJ Harvey piece, let me know. I will be adding gold or silver spraypaint to each print for that custom touch. :)

But in all seriousness…

That last post was scary. Haha, sorry. To make up for it:

I finished it! Woohoo! Here are some closer shots:

We drink a lot of tea, Ravina and I.

So after my 365 celebration party I was left with the unenviable task of carefully removing each drawing from my walls, transporting all 365 of them across town in the Portland rain (thank you to Marcus for driving me over there!), and putting them all back up in my school’s library (thank you Ravina for helping!). My thumb has a small callous on it from the thumbtacks. It took about 4 hours to get them all up. :O

Anyway, here’s a little sneak-peak:

The show will be up until March 31st, so if you live in Portland you should go check it out! PNCA is located at NW Johnson & 13th Ave. Go! Go! Go!

In other news, I will be having another show at The Observatory in April. More soon!

365 Days, 365 Drawings, and a buttload of Thank Yous

February 28, 2009

First and foremost I’d like to thank my Mom and Stepdad Dr. Prof PhD not only for allowing me to pursue my life-long dream of being a sardonic and unshowered artist, but also for supporting me in every sense of the word.

Naturally I have to thank my brothers Shem and Davin – especially Davin for commissioning a $500 piece from me. Thanks, man. And Shem, you haven’t commissioned me, but you’ve been my closest friend for many, many years now. The Summer of Roseanne will always be one of my favorite summers, even though we were the saddest bastards on the block. Props to Angela and the Schnoofer, too!

Seamus Heffernan. Oh, Seamus, we started this challenge together and I finished it alone. That’s ok, you’re already too good. Plus I was able to go the rest of the way without having my hand held. Your work never ceases to amaze me and make me terribly jealous, and for that I thank you, because you make me work that much harder. Love you, man.

Kurt Hollomon
! You were my very first teacher at PNCA and if it weren’t for you, I’d never have become the sketchbookaholic that I am today. Your absolute love for the sketchbook and your constant enthusiasm for life in general is the single most inspiring thing I’ve encountered in college yet.

Ravina Sniper
and Corie Sanford. You have been the most wonderful roommates. You are supportive of my art, receptive to my inane chatter and allow me to sleep wherever I please — be it couch, floor or kitchen table. Most importantly, you are kind to my Maggiemoo. Thank you for everything.

Marcus Gannuscio. I can always trust you to tell me what’s what. Thank you for everything. Here, have a pickle.

And now, I present to you a list of friends, professors, and contemporaries who – whether or not they know it – supported and impacted my work and life in a way for which I am eternally grateful:

Laurie Carter, Matt Taylor, Andy Pilarski, Asad Pervaiz, Matt Wilson, David Sax, Jim Hill, Brett Roberts, P Mark Anderson, Mia Nolting, BT Livermore, Morgan Walker, Tom Prochaska, Martin French, Barry Pelzner, Rose Bond, Ric Lanciotti, Serenity Ibsen, Doug Kelly, Michael Hall, Rachael Allen, Andy McDonald, Sara Kaltwasser, Patrick Melroy, Tess Keller, Meredith Andrews, Erin McCarty, Heidi Whipple, Mattie Ecklund, Lacey Anderson, Zoey Grossman, Lindsay De Armond, Genevieve Byrne, Daniel Williams, Karen Davison, Jen Lee, August Lipp, Jade Sheldon, Aidan Koch, Morgan Ritter, Abe & Beth, Chad Weatherford, Mike Davis, Ron Stivers, Chandrellie, Andy Beane, Mayr, Harpy, Kate & Angel of the Observatory, Tracey Campion, my students from Summer 2008 (CHICKEN WORLD!), and, of course, the love of my life, my dog, Miss Magnadoodle Mooface.

I dedicate this series to my Dad.

Dedicated to everyone who ever called me lazy!

My blog gets a lot of hits from people searching “dress up poo.” I’m not sure how I feel about this. I also don’t know what dress up poo is and I don’t care to find out. :D

HEY. So I’m having a shindig on Saturday in celebration of my imminent completion of the 365 days/365 drawings challenge! Yesterday I hung most of the pieces around the house:

And lastly, all of the shittiest drawings are displayed in the bathroom.

In my world, everything would be nonsense!

Patchwork

February 26, 2009

This is a work in progress, but this is the state it is currently in, and who knows how long it’ll be until I get to work on it again. Probably not until Spring Break (Spring Break woo!). Ravina Schneider (aka Ravina Sniper) and I collaborated on a few of the pieces, and I did all the assembly because I love stabbing myself with a large embroidery needle over and over again, whereas Ravina (the smarter of the two of us) does not.

A classmate pointed out that the piece is shaped like the Pi symbol. Makes sense, considering how much I love Pi.

mmmmmm….. Pi….

(yeah yeah. That was silly. I half expected a giant cane to pull me away as I typed in the coding for that pie photo.)

Anyway, here are a couple of closer shots.

I hate the livery cars that have my bird brain seeing stars…

The Blog of Denial

February 25, 2009

Alright. I’ve been denying it for a few days now but it seems that I can’t lie to myself any longer – yes, folks, it’s true: I’m sick. I’m in a slump, feeling sluggish, and the real give-away, my throat is red and hurts like a bitch when I swallow. Sounds like sick to me. And of course I’m out of apple cider vinegar!

Here’s some stuff…

A two-sided piece with some Belle & Sebastian lyrics and embroidery:

A little pod of hippos accepts a new hippo into their fambly:

A self portrait photograph in which I model the highly coveted “Kusama tights”:

And here they are again! RAWWWRRR!!!

And finally, did you know that hippos can open their mouths a full 180 degrees? Us humans can only open our mouths 45 degrees! And did you know that hippos have 36 teeth, 4 of which are incisors, and those incisors can grow up to 18 inches?! Holy cats!

Stay warm and healthy everyone!
